Water Right Research
The Idaho Department of Water Resources (IDWR) maintains water right records and assists the public with water right research. Permanent water right records are stored in document files, which are backed up by microfiche and/or digital images. IDWR maintains a computer database to facilitate water right research and water right reporting. The Geographic Information System (GIS) component of the water rights database enables water rights to be displayed in map form.
This tool allows the public to search the water rights database and view the following information, when available, for each water right:
- a computer details report
- scanned documents
- GIS map representations
- pedigree history
- water supply bank details
- general provisions from court decree
IDWR staff members are available to provide assistance in the use of the research tool and to explain water right information. Contact information can be found at https://idwr.idaho.gov/contact-us/
The database representations provided through this research tool are derived from interpretations of the paper records. Discrepancies between the database representation and the permanent document file will be resolved in favor of the actual water right documents in the water right file. Please notify IDWR if you discover inconsistencies between these data sources for any water right record.
NOTE: If you are having trouble downloading the Map (PDF) files, please try the Water Right Locator map.
